A Promise of Land — Genesis 15:7–21

This study recounts God’s covenant with Abram, in which the Lord affirms Abram’s identity and destiny and explicitly promises the land that will belong to his descendants. After Abram expresses concern about his lack of an heir, God reassures him, reiterating that Abram will have a son and then leading him through the solemn ritual of covenant-making: God instructs Abram to prepare animals, passes between the pieces in a theophanic act, and declares the boundaries of the promised territory “from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates.” This passage emphasizes both God’s faithfulness to earlier promises and the concrete, geographical nature of the blessing—assuring Abram that his seed will inherit a defined land even amid present uncertainty. It also foreshadows the long and complex unfolding of that promise in the history of Israel, balancing assurance with the recognition of future exile and restoration implicit in the larger biblical narrative.
